Antibiotics

Antibiotics

Has the age of antibiotics come to an end?We once believed that antibiotics were the miracle cure for all. They were handed out like sweets in the 1970s. Abused and over subscribed by doctors. And now they don’t work on many bugs?

So why aren’t they working?

Many strains of bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics. Even the strongest ones are failing to work. This is resulting in deadly infections and the dawn of the super bugs.

Who is to blame?

Agriculture is largely to blame and accounts for a staggering 80 % of all antibiotic use in the USA. In the US 24.6 million pounds of antibiotics are administered to livestock every year. And they are not just used to cure illness. They make animals grow bigger, fatter faster so animals are given them from the moment they are born.

If you eat meat and drink milk the antibiotic residue is directly passed on to you in the food you eat. 22% of antibiotic illness in humans is linked to food.

Another grave concern are GMO’S .It’s possible that GMO from food can transfer genetic material to your normal gut bacteria, conferring antibiotic resistance and turning them into superbugs. We have no idea of the gravity of this risk as no-one has studied it!

The most dangerous bacteria are the gram negative ones. Some forms are showing “panresistance” meaning-resistance to every antibiotic available.

In the US the following superbugs are identified as urgent and not responding to regular treatment:

  • Gonorrhoea
  • Fluconzole-resistance candida
  • Salmonella
  • MRSA
  • Drug resistant streptococus pneumonia
  • Drug resistant tuberculosis

So what are the pharmaceutical companies doing to help?

The drug industry has almost completely abandoned research because the so called miracle drugs aren’t working and there’s no money in antibiotics!

According to Paul Staffords, head of Johnson and Johnson ” The market for a new antibiotic is very small. The rewards are not there and so money is not flowing. Cancer patients pay between $30-80.000 per patient for a drug, but for an antibiotic it is likely to be only a few hundred dollars”

So the Big Pharma cause the problem, make billions of dollars and then move on when the going gets tough. Up and on to create yet more drugs and make more money. Leaving behind a trail of sickness and disease thats out of control. NICE.

What can you do?

Eat organic, avoid meat and diary. Eat more fruit and vegetables, seeds, pulses, nuts, tofu, whole grains and garlic. Add spices like cumin, turmeric, cinnamon and ginger to your food. Drink good clean water and wheatgrass that’s organic. Boost your immune system through diet, fresh air and exercise. Stay away from the doctor and pills if you can avoid it.

Peace
